Theory vs Application | Teori vs Praktek
Debate between theory and application is common. Some argue that theory is more important, while others claim that application holds more weight. So, which one should we focus on?
Theory or application First?
First, let’s figure out the order. There are two types of people: those who start with theory and then application, and those who jump straight into application, only to later wonder, “What’s the theory behind this?” For example, if Mrs. Amel wants to cook by following a cooking tutorial on YouTube, watching and understanding the video is part of the theory, while preparing the ingredients and cooking is the application. So, when Mrs. Amel learns to cook, she’s essentially starting with theory before moving to application
Theory is Great, But What About Application?
Continuing the story, let’s say Mrs. Risma tries Mrs. Amel’s dish at a gathering and loves it. She asks for the recipe, and Mrs. Amel shares the same cooking tutorial she followed. Mrs. Risma watches the same video, but will her dish turn out the same? Not necessarily. Mrs. Risma might cook it differently or make mistakes during application, even though the theory (the tutorial) is the same. So, what should Mrs. Risma do to ensure her dish tastes great?
Practice Makes Perfect
Practice involves both phases: theory and application. In the theory phase, you learn concepts — just like Mrs. Amel watching the cooking tutorial. In the application phase, you apply what you’ve learned by actually cooking. The more you practice, the better you’ll get
I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times.” — Bruce Lee (Actor, Director, Writer)
Becoming an Expert
Remember Roberto Carlos, the Brazilian soccer player who perfected the Banana Kick technique? That success likely came from two factors: luck and experience. While luck eventually comes to everyone, we’re focusing on experience, something you can build on your own. Roberto Carlos’ experience speaks for itself: 1 World Cup, 2 Copa América titles, 3 Champions League trophies, 4 La Liga titles, and more. This proves that “practice” really does pay off
Becoming an expert isn’t easy, right? It starts with learning the basics, like how to kick and pass the ball, then practicing those skills over and over until you find your own style, just like how Roberto Carlos discovered the Banana Kick
Process is Process
Theory and application don’t compete with each other; they complement and strengthen one another. Whether you start with theory or application depends on your goal and context. The real mistake is doing nothing — just learning theory without ever applicate is like “empty talk”, while practicing without any theoretical foundation is like a “blind person crossing the street”
