How to Adapt to a Rapidly Changing World? — “Bekerja” Tapi Tak Sama
Eitsss, it’s not “Berbeda Tapi Tak Sama?” — this is about how to prepare for a workplace that’s evolving. World is advancing to meet customer needs, and many jobs are being replaced by technology. So, what should we do to survive in the future? Let’s dive in!
Find Experienced Friends
In the past five years, I’ve learned so much from my friends. We often share thoughts and experiences, especially about work and organizations. Learning from your friends’ experiences helps you quickly anticipate changes since they’ve already gone through it. Learn from their mistakes, so you don’t repeat them
Good Communication Skills
Aaaa… iii… uuuu… oooo… eh? I’m an introvert, right? Ever heard the question, “What are you saying?” It’s not that they couldn’t hear you, but your message wasn’t clear. Good communication skills help you deliver your ideas. Imagine having an amazing idea but no clue how to express it. Start by preparing your thoughts and choosing simple, easy-to-understand language. This will boost your confidence and improve your communication skills over time
Try explaining something like you would to a 5-year-old. WIRED on YouTube does this, where experts explain complex topics at five different levels, adjusting their explanations based on their audience. From this, we can learn to know who we’re speaking to and tailor our communication accordingly
Innovation is “koentji” 🔑
It’s not easy to keep up with trends and digital advancements. But innovation is what allows us to save time, increase productivity, and improve life quality. For example, Starbucks’ product team created a mobile app to replace their physical card system, which is now used by 12 million people in the U.S. We need to adopt an innovative mindset to survive in this fast-paced world
Keep It Simple, Stupid! (KISS)
KISS principle is a design philosophy used by the U.S. Navy. The idea is that systems work better when kept simple, not overly complicated. You can apply this principle to navigate the changes brought by digitalization. Don’t stress over every single step, just start, appreciate your progress, and avoid overthinking things. Keep it simple and live on the process
Don’t Be Outdated, Improve Your Digital Skills!
My mom once told me about how the world changed when computers were introduced. She even took computer lessons to learn how to use them. Now? Everyone needs to know how to use a computer, and it’s no longer optional. Even elementary school kids are expected to master it. My professor told me his 3-year-old child can already use a tablet. Today, you can learn almost anything online with just one keyword: “How to…”
“Rapid development of the world forces people to keep learning quickly, striving to keep up with it 🖤”
You Must Adapt. The World is Still Changing
From my mom’s computer lessons to kids using tablets, the world is changing faster than ever. At first, it may feel difficult, but over time, we have to follow along. In 1815, England was in economic distress, and factories began using machines. By 1826, riots broke out as hand looms were replaced by power looms, with almost 1,000 machines destroyed
Technology improves production efficiency, and workers had to choose: adapt or face unemployment. From history, we learn that technology is unstoppable. Individuals, companies, and organizations must be ready to evolve with it
Don’t consume more if you’re already full
As digitalization progresses, you’ll absorb a lot of information. Don’t let yourself get overwhelmed. Take in what’s essential and save your energy for what really matters. As my mom always says, “Take only what you need so nothing goes to waste”
Lastly…
Everything comes back to survival. Charles Darwin’s theory of “Survival of the Fittest” is true — it’s not about who’s the strongest, but who can adapt the fastest. Giraffes with short necks couldn’t survive because their food was out of reach, so over time, they evolved to have long necks. The same applies to us, those who adapt will thrive
